Understanding Dry Eye Syndrome (DES)

Dry eye syndrome occurs when the production and drainage of tears are out of balance. Whether due to insufficient tear production or poor tear quality, dry eyes can lead to uncomfortable symptoms such as itching, burning, redness, watery eyes, and even eye pain. Left untreated, dry eye syndrome can escalate, increasing the risk of serious eye issues like corneal ulcers.

Common Causes of Dry Eyes

While over 80% of dry eye cases result from blocked oil glands in the eyelids, known as meibomian gland dysfunction or evaporative dry eye, other factors can contribute to this syndrome:

Gender: The majority of dry eye sufferers are women, often due to hormonal changes from contraceptives, pregnancy, or menopause.
Age: Individuals over 50 are more prone to DES.
Environment: Dry wind, air, and climates can lead to tear evaporation. Heating and cooling systems, fans, and hair dryers can exacerbate the condition.
Medication: Some medications, including antidepressants, decongestants, and blood pressure medications, may contribute to dry eyes.
Autoimmune Disorders: Conditions like Sjogren’s disease and arthritis can also be associated with dry eye syndrome.
